This multimedia courseware (language learning program) is designed for secondary school students especially for Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) in English Literature course. The syllabus consists of literary components such as poems, short stories and novels. I named my language learning program as Poem’s World because first and foremost, I only focus to the poems, which contain of six different poems. Besides, a range of texts are offered in the secondary school curriculum and covers Malaysian, British, European, Australian, American and African works. It shows that these poems are come from different part of the world. In addition, Poem’s World also covers all literary elements about poetry such as themes, moral values, setting, synopsis and language and style. It covers the whole ‘world’ of poems. Instead of it, learners are expected to be able to follow a storyline and understand a poem and to give their own personal response to the text. The study of these texts is meant to inculcate values and broaden learners’ outlook.

Poemsworld’s consists of six different poems from different countries. Six poems that will be covered in the next lessons are:

Sonnet 18 by William Shakespeare
Si Tenggang’s Homecoming by Muhammad Haji Salleh
There’s been a Death in the Opposite House by Emily Dickinson
The Road Not Taken by Robert Fros
Monsoon History by Shirley Geok-lin Lim
If by Rudyard Kipling

Hello guys!!

As far as we are concern, the teaching and learning of Literature is not an easy as the teaching and learning of other fields in language. We need to have more practice especially in thinking skills. Literature requires learners to be more critical when it deals with the literary elements in the text. So, in the beginning of the lessons, I believe that all of you have to learn about what is poetry first. You will get clear understanding of what is poetry and the definitions of each of literary elements.

Ok guys, now I believe that all of you get clear pictures about what is poetry and literary elements. Now you can move to the lesson one about Sonnet 18 by William Shakespeare.

A lesson plan is a teacher’s detailed description of the course of instruction for an individual lesson. A well developed lesson plan reflects interests and needs of students. It incorporates best practices for the educational field. The lesson plan correlates with the teacher’s philosophy of education, which is what the teacher feels is the purpose of educating the students.

Secondary English program lesson plans, for example, usually center around four topics. They are literary theme, elements of language and composition, literary history, and literary genre. A broad, thematic lesson plan is preferable, because it allows a teacher to create various research, writing, speaking, and reading assignments. It helps an instructor teach different literature genres and incorporate videotapes, films, and television programs. Also, it facilitates teaching literature and English together. School requirements and a teacher’s personal tastes, in that order; determine the exact requirements for a lesson plan.

Below is a sample of lesson plan for teachers in order to help you to plan your lessons systematically.

2) Understand the synopsis (content) of Sonnet 18 poem

3) Identify and understand the literary elements (theme, setting, moral values, tone and mood, point of view,

language and style)

4) Identify and understand the differences between ‘metaphor’ and ‘simile’ in the poem

5) Reciting poems with expression and feeling.

ACTIVITIES:

6	Students are asked to complete the second question on multiple choice questions to test their understanding about literary elements (focus on metaphor).	10 minutes
7	Students are asked to form their groups to discuss about the answers of each exercises guided by the teacher.	10 minutes
8	Students are asked to use the useful links in the website to explore about the author of the poem, William Shakespeare and also extra information about literary elements in the poem.	10 minutes
9	For closure, students are asked to click at the useful links, and watch the Sonnet 18’s video that provided by YouTube.Lastly, students are also asked to e-mail their teacher if they have problem regarding the Sonnet 18’s poem.	5 minutes
